FACQS: Feminist Anti-Capitalist Queer Superheroes

Feminist Anti-Captialist Queer Superheroes or FACQS, pronounced ‘FACTS’ as in “armed with the…” will be self-created, self-designed superheroes with various feminist, anti-capitalist and/or queer ‘powers’ chosen by their creator -- perhaps based on one's skills, knowledges, magic talents, etc.

Download the flyer as PDF-document.

It’s kind of an idea for a bloc or affinity group – akin to pink blocs – but with a bit more performance – akin to rebel clowns but not clowns, superheroes. (feminist nti-capitalist queer ones). Perhaps what a lesbian avenger bloc might have been?

Subversive but serious, spectacle but messenger. They are not meant to make the issues fluffy, but to break them down—as superheroes do—to fundamental questions of values: “You want the corporations to win, or the earth?” “You want to put people in cages, or set them free?” And they do what superheroes do best—name the bad guy, find the bad guy, fight the bad guy. Yet these are very smart superheroes and they know a lot of FACQS about things like deportation and detention centres and queer refugees and the exploitation of sex workers.

Some might be femme fatale, some might be more head master, and others of the Goddess vein. For example:

DeCorportiza – fights corporations. has truth cape that reveals facts about private security firms running deportation centres and has white collars to ring corporate criminals. maybe she has goggles to see the truth.

Pangaea – goddess of earth without borders. armed with information about shared ecological systems and a large map of pangea that shields people from those who want to break the earth into parts.

Where they go and what kinds of actions they would do is totally open. It’s an idea coming from wanting to bring in more creativity but in a responsible way. Not “making it a party” but using--or queering--pop culture to mess with imperialist capitalist culture—and bring in some of that beautiful queer f*** you energy. Ethical spectacles. Improvisational militancy.

  • All genders welcome, its the politics not the parts!
  • FACQS will be an affinity group for the Saturday demo and possibly other stuff, it’s all up to the FACQS
  • If you can’t design your superhero before the camp, materials will be available to create your superhero at camp.
  • Go to role-play websites, cartoon/comics websites,

goddess websites or lists of feminist/queer/anti-capitalist troublemakers for inspiration.

  • Bring ideas for actions, other superheroes and any materials you might have to the site!
